Decisions adopted at CITES COP19 surrounding wildlife crime have resulted in increased enforcement and capacity in key regions of West and Central Africa in recent years. EIA UK applauds these efforts and reminds Parties that enforcement actions such as seizures and arrests are only one part of a wider criminal justice response, and that long-term, sustainable responses must include the prosecution of serious and organized wildlife crime, supported by a robust and efficient judicial process.
