Wildlife Policy Analyst – Orangutan Campaign

The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) is a 501(c)(3) independent, international, non-profit advocacy organization based in Washington DC, with proven records of triggering and affecting systematic change to protect the Earth’s environment. Over the last three decades, EIA has established a unique paradigm of methods – including pioneering the use of undercover investigative techniques to expose environmental crimes and drive change. These crimes include illegal trade in endangered wildlife, illegal logging and associated trade in illegal timber, and the trade in both climate-damaging and ozone layer-depleting gases.

Since its founding in 1989, EIA has led efforts to protect elephants, rhinos, cetaceans and their habitats around the world, and has directly brought about positive changes in international laws and government policies that have saved the lives of rare and endangered species and reduced illegal logging and associated timber trade.

EIA is seeking a full-time Policy Analyst to join its Washington, D.C.-based team to further its wildlife campaign goals with a specific focus on our new campaign to protect orangutans. EIA is looking for an adaptable and committed individual to join one of the most dynamic teams in Washington today.

The position will entail a wide range of responsibilities, including:

  • Working closely with the Wildlife Team Lead to implement campaign strategies and objectives and execute campaign activities.
  • Conducting outreach and advocacy to promote policies in Indonesia and Malaysia that protect orangutans and their habitat.
  • Drafting briefings, reports, public comments, memos, blogs, and other materials to promote innovative solutions that will reduce threats to the wild orangutans
  • Representing the organization at relevant conferences and meetings as required, including high-level events and meetings with government officials, NGOs, and other groups
  • Liaising with scientists, conservationists, policy experts, indigenous peoples and local communities, and government officials from around the world
  • Maintaining existing relationships and building new contacts with relevant stakeholders such as high-level politicians, government officials, and civil society partners
  • Traveling internationally and domestically as required.
  • Supporting other wildlife campaigns as needed.

Essential Expertise and Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two years of demonstrated experience in campaigning or advocacy in an environmental, conservation, or similar civil society organization.
  • Excellent research and writing skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with a strong sense of self-motivation.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Four-year degree in a relevant field
  • Able to work independently with strong time-management and organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Professionalism and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Passion for environmental and human rights issues.
  • Ability to multitask and change focus quickly and easily.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, including proactively identifying problems and working with team members to develop solutions.
  • Good work ethic, high standards.

Other highly desirable qualifications include:

  • Experience working on environmental issues in Indonesia.
  • Familiarity with Indonesian forestry policies.
  • Fluent in Bahasa Indonesian.

Compensation and benefits:

This is a full-time position, with an estimated starting salary range between $54,000-$63,000,  commensurate with experience.
